Health Benefits of Ginseng

Ginseng root or panax ginseng has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat colds and illness, improve sexual performance, increase energy and boost overall vitality. It is also used in small amounts as an energy booster in many energy drinks such as Monster Energy and Red Bull. The root can be consumed in teas and soups or it can be eaten raw.

Many studies have been conducted about the health benefits of ginseng on the mind and body. A report by the University of Maryland Medical Center finds that ginseng stabilizes blood sugar in diabetics, inhibits cancer growth, prevents and fights colds, improves the immune system and enhances cognition (source).  This report even suggests ginseng can be used to treat ADHD without the use of dangerous drugs such as Adderal or Ritalin.

This research is further supported by a report from the University of Michigan Health System which cites studies proving that ginseng greatly reduced the number of and severity of colds and also significantly improved blood sugar control in diabetics (source).
